How long after I enroll does my Petplan policy become effective?

Is there a waiting period before I can use my Petplan insurance?
There is a fourteen (14) day waiting period after the effective date of the policy during which we will not cover any illness of your pet. The waiting period will not apply to any renewal of this policy if continuous coverage is maintained. Coverage for injury of your pet will begin twenty four (24) hours after the effective date of the policy. To start a quote click here.

Do you offer a multiple pet discount?

Are medical history records required as a part of the enrollment process?
Petplan does require your pet's medical records after enrollment. Our Underwriting Department will contact your veterinarian to obtain the records on your behalf. Any medical conditions that have been noted on the records that are not fully resolved or which are likely to continue, re-occur or lead to a related illness or injury in the future will be excluded from your policy coverage. Any situation, event or medical condition not covered by the policy. The most common exclusions are those that relate to pre-existing conditions that your pet suffered from prior to purchasing a policy.

Do you restrict enrollment based on the pet's age?
Petplan accepts new applications for dogs up to the age of eight (8) (five (5) for select breeds) and cats up to the age of ten (10). If a dog or a cat is enrolled prior to these age limits they can receive coverage beyond these age limits as there are no age restrictions on renewal. To get a quick no obligation quote click here.

Do you cover pets over the age of 8?
If a dog is enrolled with us before the age of eight (8), (five (5) for select breeds) or a cat is enrolled before the age of ten (10) we will cover that pet for the rest of it's life provide that the policy is renewed each year and policy terms and conditions are met. Because older pets tend to experience a greater frequency of illness we do charge slightly higher premiums as pets age. To start a quote click here.

What is a pre existing condition?
A pre-existing condition is a condition which first occurred or showed clinical signs before the pet's coverage started or which occurred during the policy waiting period. This would include conditions that have not yet been clearly diagnosed, are currently in remission, seasonal or being controlled via prescription medications. These conditions are normally excluded from the policy as the coverage is there to insure against future conditions and not to pay for conditions that your pet is already suffering from.

Any situation, event or medical condition not covered by the policy. The most common exclusions are those that relate to pre-existing conditions that your pet suffered from prior to purchasing a policy.
that has been placed on the policy due to a pre existing condition may be reviewed at the policy holder's request and can be removed subject to review and approval by one of our in-house veterinary consultants. For example, pre-existing conditions such as mite infestation or gastritis can be considered cured and removed from exclusion status on your policy. We would require your pet's medical records from your veterinarian indicating the existing health of your pet, along with a written request to remove the exclusion. One of our in-house veterinary consultants will review the medical records and issue the change in your policy, if applicable.

What is a Select Breed dog?
Petplan classifies the following breeds of dog as Select:

Aidi, Akbash Dog, Appenzeller Sennenhund , Argentine Dogo / Dogo Argentino, Beauceron, Bernese Mountain Dog, Black Russian Terrier, Bloodhound, Boerboel, Bulldog (all Bulldog breeds), Bull Terrier, Ca de Bou / Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Canary Dog /Presa Canario, Cane Corso , Cão de Fila de São Miguel, Chinese Chongqing Dog, Clumber Spaniel, Coonhound , Deerhound /Scottish Deerhound, Doberman Pinscher, Dogue de Bordeaux /French Mastiff, Dutch Sheepdog / Schapendoes, Entlebucher Sennenhund, Fila Brasileiro /Brazilian Fila , Gran Mastin de Borinquen, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees / Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Griffon Brabancon, Irish Wolfhound, Kangal Dog, Landseer, Leonberger, Maremma Sheepdog, Mastiff (all Mastiff breeds), Mioritic Sheepdog, Newfoundland, Ovtcharka, Rottweiler, Scottish Terrier (Scottie), Saint Bernard, Shar-Pei, Staghound , Tibetan KyiApso, Thai Ridgeback, Tosa Inu

These breeds display a higher degree of frequency and severity of disease and as such different terms and conditions apply including a lower age limit for new enrollments.

What if I am unsure when my pet's birth date is?
If you have rescued your pet from a shelter or inherited a pet from a friend it is quite possible that you will be unsure as to exactly how old your pet is. However your veterinarian will be able to give you an estimate of your pet's age based on a physical examination. We will accept a written estimate of your pet's age from your veterinarian when processing your application.
If you do not know the approximate age of your pet please call one of our customer care representatives at 1.866.GoPetplan (1.866.467.3875) who will provide you with a form for your veterinarian to complete.

Are there any breeds that are ineligible for Petplan coverage?
Petplan does not offer coverage for any wolf or wolf hybrid or for cloned pets.
